This weeks prompts from Doodlewash, could not be further away from my comfort zone of prompts! I’m not a big flower painter and I envy people who can make flowers look beautiful. I almost tried a botanical watercolour course but level of detail was too much for me to fathom. Botanical painters, who build upContinue reading “Rosebuds”

Criminal Pets
I will be launching my new series of Criminal Pet illustrations at the Woodley and Earley arts group spring exhibition. These new images are based on stories from friends and their pets! Ozzy the illegal fisher – A cat with a natural talent for pond fishing in the neighbourhood where he lived. Peaches the postContinue reading “Criminal Pets”
Tumbler
Ordinary, extraordinary I love primary and bright colours. The secret to a good painting is not perhaps the colour you use, but more the tone you apply the colour. Using painted newspaper to set-up the big shapes I used watercolour to add tone to the image and make the ice in the glass stand out.Continue reading “Tumbler”
Caterpillar
Ugly or what. This is a puss moth cesura vinula! I used to be a pure watercolourist. I sometimes hated the wishy-washy images that I produced. I started to mix things up with acrylic and gouache but recently I have found collage and text adds something that makes give watercolour a bit of impact. IContinue reading “Caterpillar”
The recipe
I started baking during lockdown, like a lot of people! I used to bake cakes for my dad to take to work in his lunch, when I was at school. I guess the cooking bug never it just lay dormant. My Favourite Lemon cake recipe 275g self raising flour 225g caster sugar 225g butter 3Continue reading “The recipe”
Alpaca
It’s easy to fall into habits and places of comfort so I have started experimenting with Watercolour and collage. I have been having a lot of successes with collage but I’m not always happy with the colours of paper that I find. I have also become attracted to newsprint in my work. I spent someContinue reading “Alpaca”
Splashing Stones
One of my early influences as an artist was a water-colourist called Neil Meacher. Neil painted mainly seascapes with a cubist style. But more importantly he used sketch books to develop his ideas. Neils work is always primary colours and is developed in layer much like the printing processes he studied in his early career.TheContinue reading “Splashing Stones”
Seafood on the sea shore
I’m going back in time to 2018. We eat out a lot on holiday. We are willing to risk the attacks of seagulls to enjoy a roll on sand, maybe I should rephrase! This is Widemouth Beach where we found a hut selling baguettes. I’ve included the original sketchbook image. I can see ways toContinue reading “Seafood on the sea shore”
Fisherman’s Cafe, Poole
Just round the corner from our Poole accommodation was the Fisherman’s Cafe. A down to earth breakfast hang-out. From the outside you would probably walk past the Fisherman’s Cafe. It was small and crowded. But the breakfasts were amazing. Traditional full English, sausages in big baps, eggs and black pudding. And a jolly menu thatContinue reading “Fisherman’s Cafe, Poole”
Sticky Paint
If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen that I have been on a Jake Winkle Watercolour workshop. Jake Winkle’s watercolour workshop was a master class of wet-in-wet technique. A technique that I have been trying very hard to replicate for years. Jake’s secret is to use sticky paint! Painting wet into wetContinue reading “Sticky Paint”
